Race Against Time

This month’s Garden Grumblings (formerly known as Tribulations of the Thirteenth, and hosted by Garden Musings) focuses on time.  It seems like there is never enough time to complete all my garden tasks, but this month seems especially brutal.

Things that encroach upon my time:

* Work: This is mostly unavoidable, but do I really need to stay so late every day?

* Rain: I know that the fall rains are inevitable, but every year I pray that they hold off until everything has been harvested and the beds are winterized.  Sometimes I get lucky.  Most years I do not.

* Lack of daylight: There’s no getting around this one.

* Holiday prep: This is the month all the craziness starts — beginning with Spirit Week and Halloween.  As much as I love costumes, they do take time to make.

There is not much I can do about most of these items except to deal with it.  I am going to try scheduling one day a week to come home early (on-time) so I can garden.  It will have to be at least partly weather dependent, though, so we will see how it goes.

I got my garlic/asparagus bed weeded today and the garlic planted. The strawberries desperately need to be weeded. And all the spent garden plants need to be pulled. Then top dressing. Next weekend might be nice. I also want to mow everything one more time. And weedeat around the vegetable beds. I’m still ahead of last year, but not by much.
